Growing the
Trust

The Trust

On  28  August 1969 Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust Inc. was incorporated to act as trustee of the Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust and has since received all royalty payments on behalf of the trust. There are approximately 1800 GEAT Beneficiaries living on Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island.

The Trust has two key responsibilities:

1. Preserve a minimum 50% of the royalties for the future of the community and its people for when the mining ends.

2. Allocate a proportion of the royalties to charitable purposes that fall into one of the following main categories:

  • Health - improving the health services and facilities for the people of the community
  • Education - to facilitate the delivery of culturally appropriate education and training programs
  • Community - funding programs, events and services that improve the livelihoods of the people
  • Employment - providing increased employment opportunities for the people
